About
Alexia Renard is a Researcher (PhD candidate) at the University of Montreal's Department of Political Science, within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on animal rights, the vegan and anti-speciesist movements, and the political engagement of adolescents. She is supervised by Pascale Dufour and has conducted extensive work on Quebec's social movements and their intersectional implications.
Her research interests include the sociology of social movements, ethical frameworks in political theory, and the intersection of environmental policy with animal rights. She explores how activism evolves from individual lifestyle choices to collective political action, particularly among youth. Recent work maps the organizational structures and identity formation of Quebec's vegan movement, emphasizing its fragmented yet impactful approach to challenging societal norms.
Publications highlight her analysis of anti-speciesist theories, legal challenges faced by activists, and the historical roots of animal rights advocacy. Her co-authored book Que veulent les véganes? (2021) traces the evolution of the animal cause from ancient philosophy to modern movements. Alexia frequently engages in media commentary, bridging academic research with public discourse on social justice and environmental issues.
