Alexandria Innes

Dr. Alexandria Innes is a Lecturer in International Relations at the Violence and Society Centre, City St George's, University of London. Her research bridges migration studies and critical security studies, with a focus on the gendered dimensions of state violence against migrants, ontological security theory, and the UK's hostile environment policies. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Kansas and has taught at the University of East Anglia, Cardinal Stritch University, and Northern Illinois University.

In her research, Innes interrogates how state violence against migrants, particularly women, reinforces sovereignty and legitimacy. Recent work examines the weaponization of domestic violence as immigration deterrence, the intersection of ontological security with structural violence, and the ethical implications of data sharing between healthcare and immigration enforcement. Her theoretical contributions include redefining state violence through the lens of ontological (in)security and advocating for intersectional approaches to migration policy.

Her publications since 2015, including monographs like Migration, Citizenship and the Challenge for Security (Palgrave) and Colonial Citizenship and Transnational Identity (Routledge), analyze how migration challenges state-centric security paradigms and reproduces systemic inequalities. She has collaborated on systematic reviews of violence against migrants and developed tools to mitigate bias in ethnicity and migration status data analysis.
