Alexandria Alie (also known as Alie Jones) serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Humanities & Communication at California State University, Monterey Bay within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She brings an interdisciplinary background to her teaching, having earned a BA in Cinematic Arts & Technology from CSUMB, an MPA from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College.
Dr. Jones specializes in creative writing, composition studies, poetry, social action writing, and community organizing, with particular expertise in Black feminist theory & praxis. Her teaching philosophy centers on creating 'generative and embodied' writing spaces that explore the intersections of power, praxis, and healing, drawing inspiration from scholars like bell hooks, Ntozake Shange, June Jordan, and Gloria Anzaldúa.
As a self-care advocate and writer, Dr. Jones directs Black Freighter Press, a revolutionary press committed to liberation exploration, and hosts the podcast 'Chit Chat with Aliecat' which focuses on self-care practices and journeys of self-love. Her creative identity as a 'Creole mermaid' reflects her unique approach to blending artistic practice with social justice advocacy.
Dr. Jones teaches HCOM 125: Writing & Reading for College Success, HCOM 230: Environmental Creative Writing, HCOM 332: Poetry Writing Workshop, and HCOM 43: Black Feminist Theory & Praxis, providing students with opportunities to engage with writing as both artistic expression and social action.
