Alexandre Monteiro

Alexandre Monteiro serves as an Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) Advisor to the Cape Verde Government under the European-funded Margullar II INTERREG V project. A nautical and underwater archaeologist, he holds a BA in Archaeology from NOVA University Lisbon and post-graduate qualifications in Archaeology and Scientific Diving. His career includes co-coordinating Portugal's "OPP A Dive into History" citizen-science project (2018-2023) and managing the UAE's Sharjah Underwater Cultural Heritage Survey Mission.

Monteiro's research centers on Underwater Cultural Heritage protection, specializing in combating looting and corporate treasure hunting while developing historical databases and shipwreck inventories across Cape Verde, Mozambique, Portugal, Uruguay, Oman, and the UAE. His work integrates heritage management with technological applications through European projects like ForSEAdiscovery (MARIE CURIE ITN) and iMARECULTURE (H2020), focusing on 3D modeling, VR, and augmented reality for cultural preservation.

He has advised the Azores Island UCH candidacy for the 2019 European Heritage Label and served as an invited teacher of Maritime and Contemporary Archaeology at NOVA University Lisbon, alongside facilitating UNESCO training at Eduardo Mondlane University's Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Mozambique.

Monteiro maintains an ORCID (0000-0001-6247-2060) and holds Google Professional Certificates in UX Design, Project Management, Data Analytics, and IT Support. Fluent in English, French, and Spanish, his cross-disciplinary approach bridges archaeological practice with digital innovation and international policy frameworks.
