About
Alexandre M. Bayen serves as the Associate Provost for Moffett Field Program Development, Liao-Cho Innovation Endowed Chair, and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley. He directs the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) and holds a Faculty Scientist position at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His academic leadership spans large-scale research initiatives with annual budgets exceeding $40M.
Education:
- Ph.D., Aeronautics and Astronautics, Stanford University, 2003
- M.Sc., Aeronautics and Astronautics, Stanford University, 1999
- Eng.Deg., Applied Mathematics, Ecole Polytechnique, 1998
Bayen pioneers research at the intersection of control theory, optimization, and machine learning with applications in transportation systems, mobile robotics, and infrastructure management. His work integrates novel data sources into mathematical models using techniques including game theory, deep reinforcement learning, and partial differential equations. Current projects analyze routing app impacts on traffic flow, develop truck platooning algorithms, and implement Integrative Corridor Management systems for congestion reduction.
His scientific contributions have earned recognition including the Presidential Early Career Award (PECASE), NASA Top 10 Innovators award, and IEEE Ruberti Prize. Media coverage of his Mobile Millennium project exceeds 200 features including BBC, Wall Street Journal, and NPR.
Bayen advises doctoral candidates in transportation systems research while managing major initiatives like Connected Corridors ($21M budget) and FLOW (deep reinforcement learning for traffic control). His Mobile Sensing Laboratory, CIRCLES, and FLOW initiatives demonstrate practical applications of cyber-physical systems in urban mobility.
