Alexandre Gonçalves

Alexandre Gonçalves is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon. His primary affiliations include the Scientific Area of Construction and Earth Sciences and Modeling. He is also part of the CERIS research unit.

His research interests focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, geographic modeling, BIM applications, and environmental sustainability. He has coordinated multiple international projects, including TOPIO (2023-2027), CIDMA (2019-2022), and EMME (2018-2021), addressing landscape observation, disaster management, and environmental education in regions like Africa and the Middle East.

Prof. Gonçalves teaches courses such as 'Geographic Information Modeling,' 'Fundamentals of Geomatics,' and 'Applied Landscape Ecology.' He has supervised over 30 PhD and MSc students, contributing to research areas like seismic vulnerability assessment, bike-sharing system optimization, and heritage BIM.

His publications emphasize GIS applications in sustainability, disaster risk reduction, and urban planning. Key projects include flood modeling in the Tagus River and BIM integration for heritage conservation.
