Alexandra Hoffmann

Alexandra Hoffmann is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on Classical Persian Literature, with an emphasis on gender & sexuality, embodiment, the history of emotions, and race/ethnicity in premodern Persianate and Perso-Islamicate cultures.

Her first book project examines the construction of masculinities in Persian narrative poems (masnavis) from the 11th to 17th centuries CE. She has also explored gendered ethics in Persianate advice literature and its connections to the Global Medieval world.

Recent publications analyze emotional expressions in medieval Persian texts and the role of animals as symbols of masculinity and misogyny in the Sindbad-nameh. These works intersect with broader themes in Persian literature and cross-cultural studies.
