Dr. Alexander Wezel is Director of Research (HDR) at Isara's School of Engineering in Agronomy, Food and Environment, leading the Department of Agroecology and Environment. With expertise recognized by the UN Committee on World Food Security, he coordinates EU projects including AE4EU, PATH2DEA, and ECOSTACK. He serves as Senior Advisor for the MSc Agroecology program and has supervised research across Europe and Africa.
Education includes a PhD in Agricultural Systems from University of Hohenheim (1998), Habilitation in Landscape Ecology from University of Greifswald (2004), and MSc in Geoecology from Karlsruhe University (1993).
His research bridges agroecology, biodiversity management, and ecosystem services, focusing on sustainable transitions in agriculture. Key areas include agroecosystem analysis, ecological corridors, water quality, and socio-economic dimensions of farming systems. Fieldwork spans fish pond ecosystems, agroforestry, and participatory action research across three continents.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on sustainability transitions, with recent work emphasizing socio-economic dimensions of agroecology, carbon dynamics in aquatic systems, and innovation adoption pathways. Earlier foundational studies established methodologies for ecosystem assessment and biodiversity conservation.
He coordinates multiple European consortia developing agroecological transition frameworks and advises policymakers through FAO. Current projects integrate digital tools, economic modeling, and farmer education to scale agroecological practices.
