UiT The Arctic University of NorwayAbout
Alexander Tøsdal Tveit is an Associate Professor and Head of the Cells in the Cold (CECO) laboratory at UiT The Arctic University of Norway's Department of Arctic and Marine Biology. He holds a PhD in Microbial Ecology from UiT and leads research projects on microbial responses to climate change, funded by the Tromsø Research Foundation and Research Council of Norway. His work focuses on atmospheric methane oxidation, permafrost ecology, and carbon cycling in Arctic ecosystems.
Research interests span three key areas: (1) Physiology of atmospheric methane-oxidizing bacteria, (2) Long-term soil warming effects on microbial metabolism, and (3) Anaerobic carbon processing in Arctic peatlands. His lab combines field studies, molecular biology, and bioinformatics to understand microbial adaptations to climate change.
Publications emphasize microbial responses to Arctic warming, methane dynamics, and ribosomal adaptations. Trends include psychrophilic methanotroph isolation, permafrost thaw impacts, and soil microbiome restructuring under climatic stress.
Awards:
- Cozzarelli Prize (National Academy of Sciences, USA) for 2019 PNAS study on methane-oxidizing bacteria
He advises graduate researchers through the CECO lab and teaches courses in genetics (Bio-2018) and molecular ecology (Bio-3018), emphasizing fieldwork, bioinformatics, and scientific writing.
