Alexander Thompson

Alexander Thompson is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester's Division of Population Health, Health Services Research & Primary Care and Manchester Centre for Health Economics (MCHE). He holds a Doctorate from the University of Manchester (2019), an MSc in Health Economics from the University of York (2011), and a First-Class BSc in Economics from the University of York (2010).

His research centers on cost-effectiveness analysis of digital health interventions, precision medicines, and diagnostic tests, with emphasis on low-cost technologies for large-scale population impact. Key domains include health economics, genomic economic evaluation, implementation science, and commercialization of health innovations through the University of Manchester Innovation Factory (UMIF).

Recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate interdisciplinary trends: systematic reviews span infectious disease modeling (MenB vaccines), mental health interventions (bibliotherapy, SEL programs), addiction treatment (digital alcohol abstinence), and cardiovascular decision modeling. These works consistently apply health economic methodologies across diverse clinical contexts while addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals for health equity.

Thompson serves as Co-Investigator on the OUTREACH Study (2018-2023) examining urine biomarkers for hypertension management and maintains active collaborations with Professors Katherine Payne (health economics), Bruce Guthrie (multimorbidity), Richard Body (emergency diagnostics), and Neil Humphrey (school mental health). He also supports SME commercialization of health technologies and holds memberships in HESG and ISPOR.
