About
Alexander Shaw is an Advanced Research Fellow at Imperial College London's School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine. He specializes in detecting viruses and bacteria from stool and environmental samples through next-generation sequencing to inform public health responses. His current work focuses on optimizing cost-effective wastewater pathogen detection methods supported by a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant.
Education includes:
- PhD in Systems Biology, University of Manchester
- MSc in Bioinformatics, Imperial College London
- BSc in Biological Sciences, Imperial College London
Research interests span genomic pathogen surveillance, wastewater-based epidemiology, infant microbiota development, and molecular detection methods. Shaw has developed the Direct molecular Detection and Nanopore Sequencing (DDNS) method currently trialed in WHO laboratories.
Teaching activities include lecturing on genomics and laboratory methods, and conducting sequencing workshops.
