Alexander Brearley

Alexander Brearley is a Researcher affiliated with the University of Cambridge, specifically the Scott Polar Research Institute, and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). His expertise lies in observational physical oceanography, focusing on Southern Ocean circulation, ice-ocean interactions, and turbulence, with significant use of autonomous underwater vehicles and ocean gliders.

His research aims to elucidate the ocean's role in the climate system by quantifying metrics like volume and heat transport, as well as exchanges of heat and carbon with the atmosphere. Current projects include analyzing the impact of changing sea ice on upper ocean stratification, the influence of winds on mixed layer development, and the role of topography in modifying the West Antarctic heat budget. He collaborates with colleagues at BAS to integrate biogeochemical implications of physical data into studies of Antarctic surface ecosystems.
