Dr. Alex Wafer serves as a Lecturer in the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. Previously, he held a postdoctoral researcher position at the Max Planck Institute for Maritime Geography (MPI-MMG) and worked as a researcher at Wits' Centre for Applied Legal Studies.
His academic background includes a PhD in Geography from the Open University (Milton Keynes), where his dissertation examined Informality, Infrastructure, and Spaces of Citizenship in Post-apartheid Johannesburg. Research focuses on urban public services, education systems, and governance frameworks within superdiverse South African contexts.
Wafer contributed to the GlobaldiverCities (GloDiv) project investigating migration and diversification in Johannesburg's public spaces under Project Leader Steven Vertovec. His methodological approach combines spatial analysis with critical citizenship studies in rapidly transforming urban environments.
Professional engagements include comparative urban research across global cities, with particular emphasis on infrastructural equity in post-colonial settings. Current teaching activities integrate his fieldwork on public space governance with contemporary geographic theory.
