Professor Alex Stevens is an Honorary Professor in Criminal Justice at the University of Kent's School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research. He specializes in drug policy, criminal justice, and public health, with a focus on the intersection of policy, crime, and social exclusion. Stevens holds a PhD in Social Policy from the University of Kent, an MA in Socio-Legal Studies from the University of Sheffield, and a BA in French from the University of Sussex.
His research explores drug policy effectiveness, harm reduction strategies, and the drug-crime link. He has led projects like the evaluation of police drug diversion schemes and overdose prevention centers. Stevens previously served on the UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (2014–2019) and as President of the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy (2015–2019).
Stevens teaches drugs, criminal justice, and research methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He chairs Drug Science's harm reduction working group and serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards, including Harm Reduction International and the Criminal Justice Alliance.
His publications span over 100 articles and books, including Drug Policy Constellations: The Role of Power and Morality in the Making of Drug Policy in the UK. His work emphasizes evidence-based policy, critiquing the moral and political dimensions of drug control frameworks.
