Alex Keegan

Alex Keegan is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of South Australia, affiliated with UniSA STEM and the Sustainable Infrastructure and Resource Management (SIRM) department. His research focuses on sustainable construction materials, particularly alkali-activated materials (AAMs) incorporating industrial byproducts like alum sludge and blast-furnace slag, aiming to reduce environmental impact and enhance durability in corrosive environments.

His work evaluates microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) resistance, alkali-silica reaction (ASR) mitigation, and acid corrosion behavior in AAMs. Key findings from his studies include improved compressive strength retention and reduced gypsum formation in AAMs with optimized AWTS/GGBS ratios. He also developed life cycle assessment models for sludge-derived concrete, estimating significant greenhouse gas reductions.

His research involves collaborations with institutions like Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology and University of Wollongong. He serves as a Research Degree Supervisor and has contributed to 4 peer-reviewed open-access publications between 2021-2025.
