Dr. Sciarra's research interests focus on prostate cancer pathogenesis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and advanced imaging techniques, particularly multiparametric MRI applications for early cancer detection and treatment monitoring. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, emphasizing the role of inflammation in prostate diseases and developing novel diagnostic algorithms that have changed clinical practice. As coordinator of the Prostate Cancer Unit at Policlinico Umberto I since 2010 (and again from 2024), he has overseen the evaluation of approximately 650 patients annually, integrating expertise from urology, oncology, radiology, radiation therapy, and pathology.
His most impactful publications include the landmark PRECISION study in the New England Journal of Medicine (2018) on MRI-targeted biopsy, which received 777 citations and directly influenced EAU guidelines, and the TITAN trial on apalutamide for metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (2019). These works exemplify his focus on translating advanced imaging and novel therapeutic strategies into clinical practice, with particular attention to precision diagnostics and personalized treatment approaches.
Among his honors, Dr. Sciarra has received multiple best poster awards at European Urological Association congresses, including two at the 2012 Paris meeting, and the SIU award for best article in Urologia Internationalis (2002). He serves on editorial boards including Urologia Journal and Frontiers in Oncology, and has coordinated numerous national and international clinical trials, notably as national coordinator for the TITAN and ABITUDE studies.
As an educator, Dr. Sciarra has directed urology specialization programs since 2018, taught across multiple medical schools and specialization programs at Sapienza University, and organized numerous multidisciplinary training courses using simulation technology. His leadership extends to coordinating the ISO-certified Prostate Cancer Pathway at Policlinico Umberto I and serving on regional oncology networks for prostate cancer management in Lazio (2024-2025).
