About
Alessandra Carriero is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY), part of the City University of New York (CUNY). Her research focuses on bone multi-scale mechanics, mechano-adaptation in growth, ageing, and disease, aiming to predict fractures, deformities, and develop treatments for skeletal pathologies. She employs interdisciplinary methods combining mechanical engineering, material science, imaging, and clinical data to study bone structure-function relationships.
Dr. Carriero earned her PhD in Bone Biomechanics from Imperial College London, followed by postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich (investigating osteogenesis imperfecta bone porosity) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (fracture mechanics of brittle bone). She was an Assistant Professor at Florida Institute of Technology before joining CCNY in 2017.
Her accolades include the Sir George Macfarlane Award (2012), John Haddad and Harold Frost Awards (2016), and an NSF CAREER Award (2017). Current research is funded by NSF, NIH, the Human Frontier Science Program, and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. She serves on the Orthopaedic Research Society Board, reviews for the Diamond Light Source, and is a Fellow of Politecnico di Milano.
