Alejandro Velasco is Associate Dean for Faculty and Associate Professor with joint appointments at NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study and Department of History. He holds a BA from Boston College and MA/PhD from Duke University in Latin American History.
Research focuses on social movements, urban politics, and democratization in contemporary Latin America. Award-winning book Barrio Rising (2015) examines urban popular politics in Venezuela. Current work involves human rights, cultural studies, and oral history methodologies. Executive Editor of NACLA Report on the Americas (2015-2021).
Honors include Fernando Coronil Prize (2016) for best Venezuela studies book. Teaching encompasses interdisciplinary Latin America courses, historical methods, and educator workshops. Frequent media analyst for outlets including NYT, NPR, and Al Jazeera.
