Alejandro Jaramillo is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Anthropology at New York University. He holds a BA in Social Anthropology from Universidad de Los Andes (Bogotá) with a minor in philosophy, and an MA in Visual and Media Anthropology from Freie Universität Berlin. His research focuses on visual anthropology, political economy, and cultural mediation in Latin America, particularly exploring commodities like coconuts and cacao through fieldwork in Colombia's Darién region. He combines ethnography with filmmaking and photography, exhibiting internationally and screening works in multiple venues.
His professional work includes freelance video editing and journalism for outlets such as The New York Times, Univision, Voice of America, OkayAfrica, and TRT World. His fieldwork has centered on Indigenous and Afrocolombian communities, examining cultural trajectories and historical ties in commodity production.
