About
Alejandro Caparros is a Professor in Energy Economics at Durham University Business School and co-Director of the Centre for Environmental and Energy Economics (CE3). He previously served as Director and Senior Researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and held post-doctoral and visiting roles at institutions including CNRS (Paris), University of Berkeley, and University of Innsbruck. His research focuses on applying game theory to climate change negotiations, ecosystem accounting, and public goods analysis.
- PhD in Economics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM)
Research interests span three core areas: Game Theory and Climate Negotiations (analyzing coalition stability, weakest-link dynamics, and sequential bargaining frameworks); Dynamic Pollution Control (studying emission taxes, trading schemes, and technology adoption under policy uncertainty); and Ecosystem Accounting (developing frameworks for environmental income measurement, integrating biodiversity and scenic values into economic models). Recent work explores synergies between national accounting systems and ecosystem services in Mediterranean forests.
His 15 most recent publications highlight: (1) Institution formation in weakest-link climate games (2025); (2) Refined environmental accounting methodologies (2023); (3) Dynamic climate agreements with information disclosure (2022); (4) Sustainable economic transitions in EU energy systems (2013); and (5) Sequential climate negotiations with asymmetric information (2004). These works employ game-theoretic models, empirical economic analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches to environmental policy.
Caparros has supervised PhD researchers including Sebastian Marland, Silvia Sanz Diaz, and Yuan Liu. He has participated in numerous European Commission-funded projects and served as a consultant for the World Bank, United Nations Statistics Division, and regional entities. As a Lead Author for the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report, he contributes to global climate cooperation frameworks.
