Alec Gershberg

Alec Gershberg is an Associate Professor of Urban Policy at The New School, where he teaches courses in public finance, education policy, and international development. He has held visiting positions at Stanford University, the Open University of Catalunya (UOC), and El Colegio de Mexico, and has served as a Senior Education Economist at the World Bank and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). His work focuses on social policy, public finance, institutional analysis, and the impact of fiscal and educational reforms in developing and OECD countries.

Professor Gershberg's research spans education finance, decentralization, and health care capital finance, with fieldwork in Latin America, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. He has contributed to journals such as World Development, Comparative Education, and Economics of Education Review, and authored the book Beyond 'Bilingual' Education (Urban Institute Press, 2004). His recent work at UOC’s Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) explores online education models and ICT integration in schools.

At The New School, he has directed the community development finance lab, chaired the Middle States accreditation sub-committee on Budget and Finance, and served as Special Advisor to the Provost for Faculty and Curricular Affairs. He has taught a variety of courses, including Public Education Policy, Comparative Education, and Doctoral Research Workshops, and organized the Milano School’s Wednesday Faculty Seminar Series for eight years.
