About
Alcides Buss is a Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil. He has established himself as a leading researcher in Operator Algebras with significant contributions to the field of C*-algebras and noncommutative geometry.
His academic journey includes:
- Bachelor's degree in mathematics at UFSC (2000)
- Master's degree in mathematics at UFSC (2002, supervisor Ruy Exel)
- Doctoral degree at WWU Münster, Germany (2007, supervisors Ralf Meyer and Siegfried Echterhoff)
Professor Buss's research focuses on noncommutative dynamical systems, actions of group(oid)s on C*-algebras, Fell bundles, quantum groups, groupoids and inverse semigroups, and p-adic operator algebras. His work represents a sophisticated blend of algebraic structures and functional analysis, advancing our understanding of noncommutative spaces and their symmetries.
His publication record shows a clear evolution from foundational studies of C*-dynamical systems to increasingly specialized areas including p-adic operator algebras and exotic crossed products. Recent work demonstrates particular strength in deformation theory, groupoid C*-algebras, and approximation properties, with publications appearing in top-tier mathematics journals including Transactions of the American Mathematical Society and Advances in Mathematics.
Among his notable recognitions are:
- Best Student at Federal University of Santa Catarina (2000)
- CNPq research productivity scholarship (since 2012)
- Geovanni Prodi Chair at Würzburg (2023)
Professor Buss has maintained an active presence in the international mathematics community, organizing multiple special sessions on Operator Algebras at major conferences and collaborating with leading researchers worldwide. His extensive conference participation and organizational roles, including the ICM Operator Algebras Satellite Conference in 2018, demonstrate his standing in the field. At UFSC, he teaches advanced courses in Operator Algebras, C*-algebras, and related topics, contributing to the development of mathematical research in Brazil.
