Alberto Verdini

Alberto Verdini is a Research Staff member and Head of Joint Laboratory at the Istituto Officina dei Materiali, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (IOM-CNR), maintaining dual roles in Perugia and Trieste. He serves as Beamline Scientist at the ALOISA facility since 2001 and leads collaborative research with the University of Perugia's Department of Physics and Geology.

His educational background includes a Laurea cum laude in Physics from the University of Perugia, with thesis research on semiconductor superlattice elastic properties via Brillouin spectroscopy, followed by doctoral studies in Trieste under Prof. F. Tommasini.

Verdini's research focuses on surface and interface phenomena in advanced materials systems. Key areas include:

• Growth mechanisms and electronic/structural/magnetic characterization of organic and inorganic thin films
• Substrate-dependent molecular assembly of thiols, polyacenes, and metal-organic complexes (phthalocyanines, porphyrins)
• 2D materials design and heterostacked nanostructures for energy applications
• Iron film growth on single-crystal substrates (Cu, Ag, Au variants)

His experimental work leverages specialized facilities including:

• ACROSS laboratory: Equipped with RHEED, LEED, and AES for surface characterization
• ALOISA beamline: Synchrotron-based end-stations for advanced spectroscopy

Current research under the 'Energy and Environment' theme targets novel 2D material synthesis and advanced characterization techniques for next-generation electronic and magnetic applications.
