His work examines the recruitment mechanisms of the Mexican government and decision-making factors for seasonal labor migration. He is currently drafting a book titled Abandoning Their Beloved Land: The Politics of Bracero Migration in Central Mexico, which connects historical guest worker systems to contemporary immigration debates.
As the grandson of a bracero and son of formerly undocumented immigrants from Michoacán—Mexico’s second-largest contributor to the program—Garcia’s research is deeply informed by personal and familial experiences with migration.
