Albert Saiz is the Daniel Rose Associate Professor of Urban Economics and Real Estate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he directs the Urban Economics Lab and teaches in both Urban Planning and Real Estate programs. Previously Director of MIT's Center for Real Estate (2014–2018), he maintains affiliations as a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, Research Fellow at IZA (Bonn), Board Member of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, and Editor of the Journal of Housing Economics.
Education:
- BA in Economics, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (1995)
- PhD in Economics, Harvard University (2002)
His research centers on urban economics and real estate dynamics, with deep expertise in housing markets, zoning regulations, and demographic impacts on urban development. He investigates how natural geography shapes metropolitan growth patterns and analyzes global real estate trends through empirical frameworks that integrate local public finance and transportation infrastructure.
Recent publications (2023-2024) reveal a cohesive research trajectory examining urban fragmentation's economic consequences, long-run housing supply determinants, and immigrant-native population dynamics. His work consistently applies big data methodologies to measure urban economies while addressing policy-relevant questions about land use, social dynamics, and sustainable development.
The Urban Economics Lab he directs serves as the operational hub for this research, focusing on real estate economics, housing market analysis, and demographic trend impacts on global urban development.
