Albert Ruth

Albert Ruth is a Senior Lecturer in the Physics Department at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, where he has been employed since 2006. Previously, he served as a College Lecturer in both the Chemistry Department (1999-2003) and Physics Department (2003-2006) at UCC. He holds an extensive academic background including an Intermediate Diploma in Physics from TU Darmstadt (1986), Diplom Physics (MSc) from University of Goettingen (1989), Dr. rer. nat. Physics (PhD) from Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry Goettingen (1992), and Habilitation (DSc) from TU Berlin (2001).

Ruth's research spans multiple areas of laser spectroscopy and photophysics with particular focus on atmospheric applications. His work encompasses cavity ring-down spectroscopy for atmospheric physics/chemistry problems, radical kinetics, trace gas detection, LIDAR for aerosol detection, and spectroscopy of organic compounds. His experimental techniques include Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy, Laser-Induced Fluorescence, Multi-Photon Excitation, and the Z-scan method. His research bridges physics, chemistry, and environmental science with strong interdisciplinary connections.

Analysis of Ruth's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy techniques applied to atmospheric monitoring. His work demonstrates expertise in both fundamental spectroscopic techniques and their practical applications for environmental monitoring, particularly in marine-atmosphere interactions and volcanic ash detection. Ruth founded and leads the Laser Spectroscopy Group within the Physics Department at UCC (http://laser-spectroscopy.ucc.ie) and serves as Director and Section Leader in the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (CRAC) in the Chemistry Department (http://crac.ucc.ie). He is also a member of the Research Consortium in the Environmental Research Institute and maintains strong affiliation with the Materials Group in the Chemistry Department. His laboratory work involves transfer of equipment to first-floor lab space at UCC.
