Albert Brouwer is a Course Instructor (Flute) at McGill University's Schulich School of Music, affiliated with the Music Performance Department. He currently holds the position of Interim Associate Principal Flute of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (OSM) since 2015 and served as Acting Principal Flute during the 2019-2020 season. His orchestral experience includes roles as Principal Flute in the Drummondville Symphony Orchestra, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra, and Springfield Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Valery Gergiev and Mstislav Rostropovich through the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra.
Education: Graduated with great distinction from the Utrecht Conservatory of Music (Netherlands) under Abbie de Quant, followed by further studies with Timothy Hutchins at McGill University. His expertise extends to orchestral conducting, having participated in masterclasses with Marin Alsop and others, and he has conducted ensembles like the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.
Brouwer is an active chamber musician and soloist, performing concerti by Bach, Khachaturian, and Mozart. His recordings appear on labels like Naxos and Decca. He maintains a flute studio at McGill and teaches at the Domaine Forget International Music Festival. He is currently accepting students for the upcoming academic year.
