Dr. Alan S. Walters is a Professor of Vegetable Science and Breeding at the School of Forestry and Horticulture, Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. A two-time Fulbright Research Scholar (Brazil, Morocco), he has contributed extensively to sustainable vegetable production systems globally through research, teaching, and outreach.

Dr. Walters’ research focuses on improving vegetable production systems through sustainable methods, including pollination ecology of cucurbit vegetables, reduced tillage practices, fertility management, disease/weed control, and horseradish breeding. His work extends to semi-arid regions in Africa, Asia, and South America, with over 80 peer-reviewed publications and $5 million in grants. He has mentored more than 40 graduate students and delivered over 250 outreach presentations.
His recent publications highlight trends in pollination services for melons, climate change adaptation in vegetable crops, and sustainable Midwestern agricultural practices. Awards include multiple SIU COAS Excellence in Education and Outstanding Researcher recognitions.
