About
Alan R. Shuldiner, MD, is the John L. Whitehurst Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and serves concurrently as Associate Dean for Personalized & Genomic Medicine, Director of the Clinical Translation Sciences Institute, Co-Director of the University of Maryland Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTSI), and Head of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition. He also holds a secondary appointment in Physiology and serves as Vice-President and Co-Head of the Regeneron Genetics Center.
Education & Training
- Lafayette College — BA, Chemistry, 1979
- Harvard Medical School — MD, 1984
- Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital — Residency in Internal Medicine, 1986
- NIH/NIDDK — Fellowship in Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1990
Research Focus
Dr. Shuldiner is an international leader in the genetics of age-related diseases, with major contributions to understanding the molecular basis of type 2 diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease. His pioneering work in the Old Order Amish—a genetically homogeneous founder population—has uncovered key causal variants including the first human APOC3 null mutation and loss-of-function alleles in CYP2C19 that modulate clopidogrel response. These discoveries have advanced precision medicine, directly influencing FDA drug-labeling and clinical genetic testing guidelines.
His multidisciplinary team integrates state-of-the-art molecular genetics, large-scale genomics, statistical modeling, and epidemiology to translate genomic findings into actionable clinical tools. More recently, his collaborative efforts at the Regeneron Genetics Center leverage exome and genome sequencing of >600,000 individuals to identify novel therapeutic targets for metabolic and cardiovascular disorders.
