Alan Gamlen is a Professor in the School of Regulation and Global Governance at The Australian National University. He is an expert in human migration and mobility with extensive policy advisory experience across global institutions.

His research examines migration governance, diaspora institutions, and geopolitical dimensions of human mobility. Key projects include 'The diversification of postwar migration' analyzing transnational community formation. Gamlen advises the World Bank, Commonwealth Secretariat, IOM, UN agencies, and national governments on migration policy. Funded by ARC, Royal Society of NZ, Leverhulme Trust, ESRC, and JSPS, his research spans comparative migration governance across 30+ countries. He founded the Australian Population and Migration Research Centre and established Migration Studies journal as its first Editor-in-Chief.
He serves as High-Level Advisor to the UN Migration Agency and Advisory Board Member for the UN Platform on Disaster Displacement, integrating indigenous Māori perspectives (as Tainui tribal member) into global migration frameworks.
