Alan Felstead is a Research Professor (Emeritus) in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. He holds a distinguished academic background with degrees from the University of Cambridge, Warwick, and Imperial College London. His career includes roles at Nuffield College, Oxford, and the University of Leicester. From 2006–2024, he was Research Professor at Cardiff University and Co-Director of the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research and Data (WISERD). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (2011) and the Learned Society of Wales (2013), and served on the Welsh Government’s Fair Work Commission as an Independent Expert Advisor (2018–2019).
His research focuses on work quality, skills development, non-standard employment, and remote work. Notable contributions include the book *Remote Working: A Research Overview* (2022) and *Unequal Britain at Work* (2015). He has secured over £12.2 million in research funding from bodies like the ESRC and the European Union. His work spans policy advising, keynote speaking globally, and over 250 publications.
His articles analyze trends in workplace technology, pandemic-era job quality, and skill utilization. Awards include the Society for Educational Studies’ prize for *Improving Working as Learning* (2009). He has advised governments, parliamentary committees, and institutions like the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.
Prof. Felstead’s research teams and collaborations, such as with WISERD and the Centre for Learning and Life Chances (LLAKES), emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to understanding work’s evolving dynamics and societal impacts.
