Alan David Irvine is a Professor in Dermatology at Trinity College Dublin, with clinical affiliations at Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin and St. James's Hospital in Dublin. He trained in Dermatology and Genetics in Belfast, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Northwestern University as a Fulbright Scholar.
His research focuses on improving lives for individuals with inflammatory and genetic skin disorders through studying skin barrier function, host-microbiome interactions, and drug development. He co-discovered filaggrin variants as a key predisposing factor for atopic dermatitis and asthma, a paradigm-shifting finding in allergy pathogenesis.
