Akintunde Akinyemi

Akintunde Akinyemi serves as Professor of Yoruba Language and Literature in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Florida, with affiliate status at the Center for African Studies where he directs the Department of Defense-funded African Flagship Languages Initiative.

His educational background includes a Ph.D. from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria.

Professor Akinyemi's research spans Yoruba language/documentation, pre-modern through postmodern African literature, cultural studies of Africa and the African Diaspora, and Nigerian Nollywood film analysis. His work emphasizes the interplay between traditional Yoruba oral forms and contemporary cultural expressions, particularly video-films.

His publications reveal a trajectory from foundational studies in Yoruba orature and royal poetry to expansive projects on diaspora religious practices and encyclopedia compilation, consistently addressing language preservation, literary analysis, and cultural transmission across continents.
