Akif Altinbas is an Assistant Professor at UConn Health, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Connecticut. He is a board-certified internal medicine physician and international medical graduate who completed his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship in Türkiye. After postdoctoral research in experimental liver laboratories at Essen University (Germany) and Massachusetts General Hospital (U.S.), he joined UConn Health in 2023 following residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut.

His research focuses on developing non-invasive biomarkers for silent metabolic dysfunction-associated liver diseases (MDAD) in primary care. Clinically, he specializes in chronic MDAD management. He mentors healthcare professionals and serves as a peer-reviewer for medical journals.
Labs & Research Experience: Prior to his current role, Dr. Altinbas worked in experimental liver research labs at Essen University in Germany and Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States, contributing to translational science.
