Research Professor · Sea-level change
Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea ResearchAbout
Dr. Aimée Slangen is a Research Leader at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) in the Department of Estuarine & Delta Systems, where she has led sea-level change research since 2017. She specializes in translating global climate models into regional coastal impact assessments at 7km resolution. Her work extends projections beyond 2100 to support infrastructure planning.
Research Focus: She investigates global/regional sea-level changes through multidisciplinary approaches combining glaciology, ocean dynamics, and geophysics. Her research emphasizes detection of climate change signals, coastal vulnerability assessments, and contributions from ice sheets, oceans, and atmospheric systems.
Publications: Her articles focus on climate modeling, regional sea-level projections, and observational analyses, consistently addressing coastal adaptation challenges across European environments.
Awards & Honors:
- Vidi grant for sea-level research (2023)
- Lead Author for IPCC AR6 Working Group I
- Core Writing Team member for IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report
Research Leadership: Manages multiple projects including EU H2020 PROTECT and NWO-funded HiRise/DARSea initiatives. Supervises postdoctoral researchers and PhD students in sea-level modeling and coastal impact studies.
Affiliations: Contributes to the NIOZ Sea Level Research Centre and collaborates with Utrecht University, CSIRO Ocean and Atmosphere (Australia), and international climate assessment teams.
