About
Adwait Sharma is a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human, Centre for Bioengineering & Biomedical Technologies (CBio), IAAPS Centre for Integrated Materials, Processes & Structures (IMPS), Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems (SES), and The Foundry: Centre for Digital, Manufacturing & Design. His research bridges human-computer interaction and tangible interface design with practical applications in immersive technologies.
Sharma's work focuses on haptic interaction systems, particularly force-feedback mechanisms for deformable interfaces. His research explores how soft robotics, hydrostatic transmission, and dynamic stiffness control can enhance user experiences in mixed reality environments. Current projects investigate domestic robot utilization and XR innovation through pan-European collaborations, emphasizing embodied interaction in creative industries.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal three dominant research trajectories: (1) high-fidelity force-feedback systems using novel transmission methods, (2) empirical studies on deformable surface interactions, and (3) XR infrastructure development for creative applications. These works consistently integrate hardware innovation with user-centered evaluation methodologies.
Key recognitions include:
- Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) Media Fellow (2025)
- People’s Choice Best Demo Award (2023)
- Visiting Researcher appointment at NHS Bristol (2025)
Sharma actively supervises doctoral students and leads significant grant-funded work including the €2.5M EMIL project (2022-2025), which establishes a European network of XR labs supporting creative industries through physical infrastructure and embodied interaction research. His collaborations span 12+ European institutions with notable industry partnerships.
He directs research within the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human's haptics subgroup, coordinating cross-center initiatives between CBio, IMPS, and The Foundry to develop next-generation human augmentation technologies with applications in healthcare, manufacturing, and sustainable energy systems.
