About
Dr. Adriana Zeevi is a Professor of Pathology, Surgery, and Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where she serves as Director of the Tissue Typing Laboratory providing 24/7 service to solid organ and bone marrow transplant programs at UPMC, VA, and Children's Hospital. With over 30 years of experience, she specializes in immunogenetics and histocompatibility, focusing on immune monitoring post-transplantation and characterization of humoral sensitization and rejection in solid organ transplants.
Dr. Zeevi earned her BA (1973), MS (1974), and PhD (1979) in Microbiology from Bar-Ilan University in Israel. She is a Diplomat in the Laboratory Specialty of Histocompatibility Testing and has held significant leadership roles including President of ASHI (2002-2003), member of the NIH TTT Study Section (2006-2008), and member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of IPTA (2015-2017).
Her research focuses on transplantation immunology, particularly donor-specific HLA antibodies, antibody-mediated rejection across multiple organ types, and novel approaches to evaluate desensitization protocols. Dr. Zeevi directs the Alloantibody Core for pediatric heart transplant CTOT-04 and is involved in multiple NIH-funded projects examining immune responses in kidney, liver, and lung transplant recipients. Her recent publications address critical issues in transplant pathology including Banff classification systems and clinically significant donor-specific antibodies.
- Kidney transplantation and antibody-mediated rejection
- Liver transplant immunology and tolerance
- Pediatric heart transplant antibody monitoring
- Non-HLA antibodies in lung transplantation
- Development of improved antibody detection methods
Dr. Zeevi has received numerous awards including the NIH New Investigator Award (1982-1984), Young Investigator's Award for Research in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (1989), and has served as a key contributor to major consensus guidelines in transplant pathology.
As an educator, she directs the Pathology Resident rotation and coordinates fellow/clinician rotations through the clinical laboratory, while also serving on several Departmental committees at UPMC. Her work continues to advance the field of transplantation immunology and improve outcomes for transplant recipients across multiple organ systems.
