About
Professor Adriaan Geuze serves as Professor of Landscape Architecture within the Department of Urbanism at Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. His work transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries, positioning landscape architecture as an engineering tradition capable of addressing complex national challenges.
Geuze's research interests focus on systemic approaches to large-scale spatial challenges including climate adaptation, housing construction, energy transition, and agricultural realignment. He argues that the Netherlands' current approach dominated by procedures and short-term plans fails to correspond with reality, advocating instead for engineering-based solutions grounded in knowledge and facts. His work emphasizes the Dutch engineering tradition of land making as a platform for addressing medium-term challenges while protecting the country from market forces and decentralized approaches.
As founder and principal of West 8 landscape architecture and urban design firm, Geuze has built a diverse portfolio spanning 35 years. His practice demonstrates how crossing professional boundaries can yield innovative solutions to complex spatial problems. Notable projects include Borneo-Sporenburg in Amsterdam, Strijp S in Eindhoven, Madrid Rio city park in Spain, Toronto Central Waterfront in Canada, and Rotterdam Central Station.
Geuze previously served as Professor by Special Appointment of Residential Building at TU Delft and has taught as a Visiting Professor at Harvard University. He curated the second Rotterdam Architecture Biennale with the theme 'The Deluge' and has been instrumental in positioning landscape architecture as central to solving urgent spatial challenges facing the Netherlands.
