Adel Samson is Professor of Cancer Medicine and Immunotherapy at the University of Leeds' Faculty of Medicine and Health and an Honorary Consultant Medical Oncologist specializing in hepatocellular carcinoma and early-phase clinical trials. He leads the Translational Cancer Immunotherapy Group and a portfolio of international oncolytic virus trials including the TG6002.03 Phase 1-2 study as Chief Investigator.
His academic qualifications include:
- BSc Genetics (First Class Honours, 2004)
- MBChB Medicine (Honours, 2006)
- MRCP Medical Oncology (2009)
- PhD in 'Causative and Therapeutic Viruses in Liver Cancer' (2015)
Samson's research focuses on harnessing immune responses against solid tumors through rationally-designed oncolytic virus therapies, personalized peptide treatments, and immunotherapy-radiotherapy combinations. His work spans pre-clinical optimization, clinical trial execution, and translational analysis of immune mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma and HPV-associated cancers.
He received the CRUK Clinician Scientist Fellowship in 2019 for developing oncolytic virus-based immunotherapies targeting liver cancer.
Samson mentors 8 current PhD students and academic clinical fellows while securing multi-million pound grants from CRUK, NIHR, and industry partners. His laboratory at the Wellcome Trust Brenner Building operates within the Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St James's and the Infection and Immunity Brain Cancer Research Group.
