Adeeba Deterville is an Assistant Professor in the School of Undergraduate Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), specializing in African-centered psychology. Her scholarship bridges West African epistemologies and transpersonal psychology through frameworks like Sankofa (cultural retrieval) and Jegnaship (mentorship).
Professor Deterville holds a Ph.D. in Transformative Studies from CIIS and an M.A. in Transpersonal Studies. She founded and directed the Center for Black & Indigenous Praxis at CIIS and established the Black Psychology Project. As an active member of the Association of Black Psychologists since 1989, she has held national leadership roles including Chair of the General Assembly and Co-Chair for Certification in African Black Psychology.
Her publications examine how West African concepts like àse (life force) inform psychospiritual wellness in diasporic communities, advocating for culturally grounded therapeutic approaches.
