University of Southern CaliforniaAbout
Dr. Adam Keith Huttenlocker is an Associate Professor in the Division of Integrative Anatomical Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. He directs graduate courses in Microscopic Anatomy and serves as Histology discipline coordinator for medical students. He holds a PhD from the University of Washington (2013) and completed an NSF-funded postdoctoral fellowship in comparative vertebrate physiology at the University of Utah (2013-2016).
His research investigates the origins of mammalian skeletal function through hard-tissue histology and biomedical imaging of modern and fossil bone. Key focuses include mammalian behavior, growth, endothermic physiology, and collagen fiber orientation in bone using polarized light microscopy. The Huttenlocker Lab conducts paleontological fieldwork in the southwestern US and southern Africa, supported by NSF and international grants.
His publications (2016-2024) predominantly explore Triassic and Permian vertebrate evolution, with recurring themes in paleophysiology, bone microstructure analysis, extinction events, and biomechanical adaptations. Methodological strengths include osteohistology, fossil reconstruction, and comparative anatomy.
Dr. Huttenlocker leads an active research group and emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches linking anatomy, evolution, and paleosciences in his teaching philosophy.
