Adam James Smith

Dr. Adam James Smith is an Associate Professor in English Literature at York St John University, specializing in eighteenth-century literature with a focus on satire, print culture, and political writing. He serves as Course Lead for English Literature and co-directs the York Research Unit for the Study of Satire (YRUSOS).

• Co-editor of People of Print (Cambridge University Press) and Spectres, Horrors and Hauntings (Bloomsbury).
• Hosts the podcast Smith & Waugh Talk About Satire and produces the BSECS Podcast.
• External Examiner for English Literature at Liverpool University.

His research spans propaganda, protest, and satire in the long eighteenth century, with recent work on Eliza Haywood, Charles Ignatius Sancho, and the intersections of Gothic, Romantic, and Sentimental cultures. He has contributed to public engagement projects like Cold Warnings: Nuclear Armageddon in the Curriculum and Gulliver’s Travels: Listen with Audrey.
