About
Dr. Adam Hunt is a Swiss National Science Foundation Fellow at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD in Evolutionary Psychiatry from the University of Zurich and works at the intersection of archaeology, anthropology, and evolutionary psychiatry.
His research focuses on:
- Evolutionary explanations for mental health conditions
- Specialized cognition and neurodiversity
- Evolutionary psychiatry frameworks
- Human evolutionary studies
Hunt's scholarly work examines how evolutionary theory can provide new insights into mental health, particularly regarding autism spectrum conditions. His research proposes that certain mental health variations represent evolutionary specializations rather than purely pathological conditions. He has developed the DCIDE framework (Describe, Categorise, Integrate, Depict, Evaluate) as a rigorous method for evolutionary analysis in psychiatry that addresses 'just-so storytelling' criticisms.
His publications reveal consistent themes across evolutionary psychiatry, with particular emphasis on cognitive specialization as an adaptive process. His work demonstrates how traits like autism may represent evolved specializations that provided advantages in ancestral environments, challenging conventional medical models. The research shows strong integration between anthropology, evolutionary biology, and clinical psychiatry.
- Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship
As an educator and communicator, Hunt hosts the 'Evolving Psychiatry' podcast and serves as Communications Officer for ISEMPH. He is an executive committee member of the Evolutionary Psychiatry Special Interest Group at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, where he manages their YouTube channel, significantly contributing to public understanding of evolutionary approaches to mental health.
