Adam Bronson

Adam Bronson is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Durham University, specializing in modern Japanese history. His research examines the interplay between transnational ideas and local intellectual/political practices, with a focus on postwar Japan.

His research interests span cultures of quantification, global/comparative history, intellectual history, Japanese history (19th–20th centuries), public opinion, and translation/political thought. His work often bridges disciplines, exploring themes like opinion polls, transnational intellectual networks, wartime rumors, and comparative methodologies.

Recent publications highlight his expertise in postwar democratic movements, transwar political conversion, and the intersection of folklore with historical analysis. He has contributed book reviews, chapters, and peer-reviewed articles to journals like Global Intellectual History and Modern Intellectual History.

Bronson actively supervises postgraduate researchers, including PhD candidates Annabel Storr and Zoe Shipley. He organized a 2019 conference on public opinion and comparative history.
