Adam Birnbaum

Adam Birnbaum is an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the State University of New York at Purchase Conservatory of Music. A graduate of The Juilliard School's inaugural jazz program, he has established himself as a prominent jazz pianist, composer, and educator through performances at iconic venues like the Village Vanguard and international festivals including Montreal Jazz Festival and Capetown Jazz Festival.

Birnbaum’s research and creative work focuses on jazz piano performance, contemporary jazz composition, and cross-genre chamber music arrangements. His 2009 commission Dream Songs (based on John Berryman's poetry) and collaborations with Chelsea Music Festival since 2012 highlight his innovative approach to blending jazz with classical traditions.

Selected as Steinway Artist, Birnbaum has performed on over 25 albums as sideman with legends like Wynton Marsalis and Al Foster, while leading four internationally acclaimed albums. His teaching integrates practical performance experience with academic rigor through Friday office hours and ensemble mentorship.
