Prof. Achim Wambach is a Professor of Economics at the University of Mannheim and has served as President of the ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research since April 2016. Previously, he directed the Institute for Economic Policy at the University of Cologne and held professorships at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He holds advisory roles in the German Ethics Council, Monopolies Commission (Chairman 2016-2020), and Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs committees.
His research focuses on market design, competition policy, and information problems in markets, employing methods from industrial economics. Key areas include decarbonization subsidies, supply chain resilience, and industrial policy frameworks.
Wambach holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Oxford and an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics, followed by habilitation in Economics at the University of Munich. He chaired the German Association for Social Policy (2017-2018).
