About
Dr. Abu Sina is a Senior Lecturer and Group Leader of Sina Lab at the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UNSW Sydney. He previously held roles as a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering & Nanotechnology (AIBN), The University of Queensland, and as a Visiting Scientist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Harvard University) and a Visiting Research Fellow at Irving Cancer Research Center (Columbia University). His academic qualifications include a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (2017) and a Higher Education Teaching Certificate (2022) from Harvard University.
Research Interests focus on nanotechnology for early cancer detection, particularly through DNA methylation analysis and liquid biopsy platforms. His work spans single-cell proteomics, extracellular vesicle characterization, and biosensor development for trace-level biomarker detection. He has pioneered the Methylscape Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) test, which has been published in Nature Communications (2018). His research has generated 56 peer-reviewed publications, including four in Nature and Science family journals.
Scientific Awards include the Research Excellence Award 2022 (Dana-Farber), Metrohm-EDRACI Young Electrochemist Award 2021, and Young Scientist Award 2020 (IAAM). He has received grants from NHMRC, ARC, Queensland Government, and industry partners like AstraZeneca and Evolution Mining.
Teaching and Supervision: Dr. Sina emphasizes integrating research, industry experience, and high-standard pedagogy. He aims to cultivate future leaders and global citizens through his teaching in biotechnology, molecular biology, and nanomedicine.
