Dr. Abi Beane is a Reader in Critical Care Medicine and Health Systems Development at the University of Edinburgh. She co-leads the Wellcome UKRI Collaboration for Research, Implementation, and Training in Asia and Africa, focusing on data-driven improvements in critical care globally. Her roles include Honorary Senior Lecturer at UCL and the University of Birmingham.
Abi trained as a nurse at the University of Cambridge, earned an MSc in Critical Care Medicine from Queen Mary’s University London, and completed a PhD at the University of Amsterdam. Her career includes clinical work in conflict zones and co-founding NICS MORU, a nonprofit strengthening healthcare registries in 17 countries.
Her research integrates health services, qualitative methods, and data science to improve ICU practices and address health inequities. Key areas include real-time public health surveillance, equitable clinical trial participation, and learning health systems in low-resource settings.
Abi has supervised multiple PhD students and is funded by initiatives like the Wellcome Trust. Her 2019 Intensive Care Society Gold Medal recognizes her impactful research contributions.
