Abel Rosado is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Botany within the Faculty of Science. His academic journey includes a BSc in Chemistry (1999) and a PhD in Molecular Biology (2006) from the University of Malaga, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at UC-Riverside (2006-2011) and the University of Malaga (2012-2014).
Rosado leads a cross-disciplinary research cluster integrating Anthropology, Ethnobiology, plant sciences, analytical chemistry, and clinical nutrition. His lab focuses on characterizing traditional berries native to the Pacific Northwest as natural sources of phenolic compounds for managing prediabetes, collaborating with First Nation knowledge keepers and private companies.
His research spans plant membrane contact sites, particularly ER-PM interfaces, and their roles in abiotic stress responses, lipid homeostasis, and cellular signaling. Key themes include
- Stress adaptation mechanisms
- Phosphoinositide signaling
- Cytoskeleton dynamics
- Phenolic compound bioactivity
- Indigenous medicinal knowledge
His team includes PhD candidate Miriam Fenniri and MSc candidates Elizabeth Orhuamen, Christopher Cote, and Christiaan Spangenberger. Contact: abel.rosado@botany.ubc.ca.
