About
Abel N Kho, MD is Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, serving as Founding Director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IAIM) and Co-Director of the Northwestern Network for Collaborative Intelligence (NNCI). His work bridges clinical medicine, biostatistics, and AI to advance health data science and population health analytics.
Dr. Kho's educational background:
- MD: Medical College of Wisconsin (1999)
- Residency: University of Wisconsin, Internal Medicine (2002)
- Chief Residency: University of Wisconsin, Internal Medicine (2003)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship: Regenstrief Institute, Medical Informatics (2006)
His research integrates electronic health records, administrative data, and geospatial analytics for computational phenotyping, population disease burden estimation, and quality improvement. An internationally recognized expert in privacy-preserving record linkage, he pioneered large-scale real-world applications and co-founded a startup acquired by Datavant.
Recent publications demonstrate interdisciplinary applications of AI across cardiology (predictive modeling for cardiac amyloidosis), nursing home quality improvement, community health interventions for sodium reduction, and epidemiological studies of rare diseases. This work consistently addresses health disparities through innovative data science approaches.
Major awards:
- Donald A.B. Lindbergh Award for Innovation in Informatics (2020)
- Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (2017)
- Robert Wood Johnson Companion Prize to Knight News Challenge (2014)
Dr. Kho mentors numerous trainees and secures substantial funding from:
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- National Science Foundation (NSF)
- Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
- Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H)
- Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
He leads the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IAIM) and co-directs the Northwestern Network for Collaborative Intelligence (NNCI), while serving as Principal Investigator for the Chicago Area Patient Centered Outcomes Research Network (CAPriCORN). His initiatives focus on augmenting clinical expertise with computational methods to address health disparities through multi-institutional collaborations.
